Not a bad start to the 2024 Halloween Movie Marathon. In Sea Fever, the captain of a fishing trawler, desperate to make a big catch, takes his ship into an area restricted by the Coast Guard. The area is supposed to be restricted because of whales and their calves, but the crew quickly discovers something far more sinister.
First of all, the ocean is terrifying, so any story about being trapped in the middle of the sea is already scary for me. This one features some very good acting, particularly Hermione Corfield, who plays a PHD student onboard to study any anomalies in the crew's catch.
The movie employs some of what made The Thing and Alien classics (isolation, suspicion of each other). While it doesn't necessarily bring anything new, it does pull off the themes quite well. The sense of dread and isolation are palpable throughout the film, and the cinematography (with the exception of a few too-dark scenes) is excellent. I'm giving it a solid B. Streaming on Shudder.
