Dr. Giggles (1992) - Day 7 of the 2024 Halloween Horror Movie Marathon

Writer's picture: tomdeadytomdeady

This was an odd movie. Larry Drake (Dark Night of the Scarecrow) plays an escaped mental patient/ wannabe doctor who becomes obsessed with Holly Marie Combs (Picket Fences). There are some clever kills in this one thanks to the use of medical equipment as murder weapons. There are also a few hat-tips to earlier slashers, the final girl running to a neighbor's house, the swinging light in the dark basement, the inevitable ankle-grab as the girl walks past the assumed-dead killer.

The problem was, they tried to make it a horror-comedy, with Drake spewing corny, medical-themed one-liners before and after every kill. If they had played it as a straight horror movie, it would have been more effective. Drake's creepy giggle and the creative kills could have carried the film to a higher level of slasher notoriety, but it just fell short for me.

I'm going to give it a C+ and dream of what could have been. Streaming on Shudder.
